Eine vollständige Auflistung wichtiger Alben kann es wahrscheinlich nie geben, da jeder die Wichtigkeit der Werke unterschiedlich beurteilt. Bei der folgenden Auflistung habe ich mich bemüht, einigermaßen wertfrei zusammenzutragen.
Wichtige Alben sind im Sinn der Liste einerseits die so genannten Meilensteine der Rockmusik. Dies sind Werke, die aufgrund ihres Stellenwertes genannt werden/werden müssen. Oft handelt es sich um stilprägende Alben, manchmal auch "nur" um Alben, die in dem Erscheinungsjahr outstanding bzw. außerordentlich bemerkenswert waren. Sie können, müssen aber nicht, Verkaufschlager gewesen sein. Wichtig sind natürlich auch Alben, die sich schlicht und einfach gut verkauft haben und/oder große Charterfolge waren. Die wiederum müssen für den Rockfan nicht unbedingt wichtig sein, man kann sie aber aufgrund ihres kommerziellen Erfolgs kaum verschweigen.
Und noch eine Anmerkung: oft wird solchen Aufstellungen vorgeworfen, sie stützten sich sehr stark auf ältere Erscheinungsjahre. Ich denke, das ist eine zwangsläufige Folge solcher Listings. Denn bei neuen Alben ist es im Moment schwer zu sagen, ob es sich sich um echte Meilensteine handelt. Je aktueller ein Betrachtungsjahr, desto weniger handelt es sich in der Regel um Meilensteine. Meistens kann man dann im Moment nur sagen, dass ein solches Album im Erscheinungsjahr eines der besten Alben oder bemerkenswertesten Alben war.
